Career Story: Kati Nietosvuori
From Nurse to Developer - Kati’s Career Path
Kati’s path into IT wasn’t exactly straightforward, and that’s precisely what makes it so inspiring. Her journey led through training as a goldsmith, a career in healthcare and many different trials before she discovered the world of coding, where she has now found her place at Neomore. Kati has been working as a junior developer in Neomore’s UX & Application Innovation team for just under a year.
From Working with Hands to Writing Code
“In 2016 I started studying nursing, while an acquaintance of mine began studying programming. At the time I thought, I’ll never be an office worker,” Kati laughs.
But her interest in computers and gaming drew her in and eventually she enrolled in Information Systems studies at the University of Jyväskylä. Coding sparked something familiar: creativity.
“I’ve always been creative and loved visual arts as a kid. Coding felt like a natural continuation of that.”
A New Career Path Through Uncertainty
Before starting her IT career, Kati worked as a nurse for four years.
“It just didn’t feel right. I had to rethink what truly interests me.”
Coding seemed like the right direction - and even though SAP was completely new to her, it didn’t stop her:
“I just wanted to get into coding.”
She found Neomore while looking for a junior position. The job search felt discouraging but also hopeful:
“It seemed like there weren’t many opportunities for juniors back then. I was really happy when I got the offer from Neomore.”
Daily Life as a Developer - Learning at Her Own Pace
Kati now works on an internal project developing a CV system using React. Her workdays are filled with problem-solving and reflection.
“The pace is relaxed, but there’s plenty to do. The work is mentally engaging - and that’s the best part.”
Technologies like SAP UI5, CAP and ABAP have become familiar, even though she hadn’t worked with them before.
“I quickly learned how different frameworks work. Even when the language is the same, each one has its own quirks.”
Besides technical skills, Kati feels she’s grown in communication.
“I’ve had lots of support from more experienced colleagues but I’m also challenged to think for myself - and often the solution comes once I stop and reflect.”
A Work Community That Truly Cares
One of the biggest differences from her previous workplaces is the team culture.
“Here, you’re trusted - you can manage your day independently without constant oversight. It feels like a truly grown-up workplace.”
Kati also appreciates the sense of community:
“Everyone is included, we celebrate different cultures and backgrounds. The vibe is positive and relaxed - and the people are great.”
Creative Outlets Beyond Code
Outside of work, Kati enjoys spending time with friends, playing video games, reading fantasy novels and occasionally drawing or doing other creative activities with her hands.
“I used to code in my free time too but now work fulfills that need. It’s great to have a job that truly motivates you.”
Looking Ahead
Kati isn’t aiming for a specific role just yet but hopes to keep growing especially in frontend development.
“Maybe someday I’ll get into full stack too. But I’m not stressing - there are plenty of opportunities here if I ever want to try something new.”
Right now, what matters most is doing meaningful coding work:
“I’m genuinely happy about that.”
