Career Story: Smitha Madhavan

Smitha is a Senior Consultant in our Cloud Technology & Architecture team, focusing on integration solutions within the SAP Business Technology Platform. She joined Neomore after relocating with her family to Finland and has been an important part of our team ever since.

Finding a career path in IT and integration

Unlike many who describe IT as their childhood dream, Smitha’s path into technology started more by coincidence. As a teenager, she wasn’t sure which direction to take,  and after graduating as an Electronics and Communication Engineer during the IT boom, she followed her brother’s footsteps and got curious about the field.

Her first job happened to be in integration, and that “accidental” start has defined her career ever since.

“What I have always found interesting is that integration sits right in the middle - you get to see both the source and the target, understand the business flow and purpose, and then make them work together. Bridging systems that do not ‘speak the same language’ and making them work together has always felt meaningful and satisfying to me,” she says.

At her very first workplace, Smitha was introduced to SAP, which turned out to be a lasting influence on her career. Over time, she has worked with colleagues and customers around the world, learning to appreciate different cultural and professional perspectives. She feels that the moments when she stepped outside her comfort zone, whether by taking on new responsibilities or learning unfamiliar technology – were the ones that shaped her the most.

Joining Neomore and building bridges in the cloud

Before moving to Finland, Smitha was already searching for roles that matched her profile. At the same time, Neomore had opened a position that felt like an excellent fit.

“From the very first interactions, I got a positive feeling. The company felt like a close-knit but growing organisation with a healthy culture, which convinced me to join.”

Today she works in integration as well as AI and automation – simplifying and smartifying business processes. Most of her work is with SAP Business Technology Platform, where she designs, develops, and implements integration solutions. In addition to delivering projects, she supports proposals and estimates, while also keeping an eye on new technologies that can benefit customers.

A typical day usually starts with prioritising tasks and checking updates. After that, she works on her tasks according to the planned priorities. If she is working on customer projects, her days may also include client meetings, either online or on-site, which she finds important for building trust and maintaining strong relationships. Smitha also enjoys the everyday moments, like having lunch with colleagues, which bring connection and lightness to her workdays. Beyond delivery, she contributes to pre-sales activities and invests in self-learning to stay up to date with the fast-moving technology.

Culture of growth, diversity and balance

What excites Smitha most about working at Neomore is the culture.

“There is real encouragement to learn, whether through training, certifications, seminars or simply exploring a new idea. The leadership team is very accessible and the hierarchy is flat, which makes collaboration easy.”

She also values the diverse and inclusive workplace, where colleagues from different nationalities bring a wide range of perspectives. The social side matters too: from summer events and Christmas parties to smaller hikes, clubs or gym sessions, there are many ways to connect beyond daily work.

Work-life balance is another important factor. As a parent of young children, Smitha appreciates the flexibility Neomore provides.

“I take deadlines seriously and try to stay organised, but I also appreciate the understanding that family commitments matter too. Having that balance reduces stress and allows me to focus better. I’ve also learned that it’s okay not to be perfect at everything. Sometimes you just have to prioritise, make trade-offs and be kind to yourself.”

Lessons and memorable moments

With 20 years in IT, Smitha believes that delivering successful integration projects is less about chasing every new trend and more about understanding the customer’s landscape, designing solutions that bring real value, and simplifying processes to make life easier. Good planning, risk awareness, teamwork and clear communication are part of her everyday approach.

“I believe in building trust by treating customer pain points as my own and delivering quality consistently.”

Some of her favourite moments at Neomore include working on the company’s first PoCs in areas like SAP Build and AI, which later opened the door to development projects and new opportunities. Exploring new use cases with colleagues has also been rewarding, while positive feedback from customers and team celebrations stand out as highlights. Exploring new use cases with colleagues has also been rewarding, opening doors to fresh opportunities. And of course, the positive feedback from customers and the celebrations with her team stand out as highlights.

“Understand the why before the how”

When asked what advice she would give to someone starting out in SAP or integration, Smitha highlights the importance of context:

“Understand the ‘why’ before the ‘how.’ Learn the purpose of ERP, why integration is important, and how it simplifies complex landscapes. Don’t just focus on the technical side – take time to understand the business process and context behind it. That knowledge will help you design better, more meaningful solutions.”

For Smitha, curiosity and continuous learning are what keep the work interesting. Technology is always changing, and with it come new chances to grow. Staying curious, practical, and collaborative makes the journey rewarding – both for her and for the customers she supports.
